Chapter 9 of Soap and Water is now posted at Red Lemonade. As always, your comments are the currency that counts. Thank you so much for continuing to leave comments, even little itsy-bitsy ones.

Also at Red Lemonade this week, a revised version of Chapter 1. If you have time to read it and have thoughts about which you like better, the new one or the old one, let me know on the poll page I set up.

As always, PDFs and e-reader-friendly versions are on the Soap and Water page.

Even if you don’t comment, thank you for reading. But if you do comment, thank you even more!

Soap and Water Chapter 7 posted

by on Aug.07, 2011, under Uncategorized

Soap and Water chapter 7 is now posted at Red Lemonade. This week’s goal, along with lots of comments, is Facebook likes. If you can, please Facebook-like me plus leave a comment!

Thanks so much to everybody who’s been passing this along and reading it themselves. It’s super-gratifying to get this out in the world finally, and, with all your help, to find people actually interested in it. I could not be more grateful. In fact, the comments I’ve been receiving have been so helpful I’ve actually almost finished a new revision of Chapter 1; look for a poll in the future on which version of Chapter 1 you like better.

Soap and Water Chapter 6 posted

by on Aug.03, 2011, under Uncategorized

Soap and Water Chapter 6 is now posted at Red Lemonade.

The exciting news this time is that all your help commenting and promoting has made me visible enough to be invited to read from the book at KGB in late September, along with other Red Lemonade writers and two of their published authors.  Thank you to all who continue to read, Facebook-like, Tweet, email-forward, and/or comment. Every little bit of what you’re doing is definitely making a difference, and I hugely appreciate it.

As will be standard now, PDFs, EPUBs, and MOBIs are on the Soap and Water page. After you read them, please continue to promote and comment!

Soap and Water Chapter 5

by on Jul.31, 2011, under Uncategorized

It’s my birthday! And all I want is for you guys to go to Red Lemonade and read Chapter 5 of Soap and Water (and leave a comment). You don’t have to be as thorough as the gentleman who spent two-plus hours leaving me thirty comments on one chapter on Friday. Just one comment is great. Or more if you’re moved to, of course.

Thank you all so much for all the reading and commenting you’ve done so far. I truly appreciate it.

From now on, all PDFs, ePubs, and MOBIs will live on the Soap and Water page of this blog. After you read a chapter on your Kindle or iPhone or whatever, though, please go comment!

Soap and Water Chapter 4

by on Jul.27, 2011, under Uncategorized

Soap and Water chapter 4 is now posted at Red Lemonade. This is the first time I’m trying publishing two chapters in a week, and I notice that the commenting has slowed down. Is it too much? I want to make sure I’m not overwhelming you guys. What matters to me above all is putting it out at a pace that fits people’s ability to read it.

Anyway, thank you all so much for continuing to read and for your kind words. It means a lot to me.

For those who prefer it, here’s the PDF. Here’s a zip file with it in ePub format, and one with it in .mobi (for Kindle).

Soap and Water Chapter 3

by on Jul.24, 2011, under Uncategorized

Chapter 3 of Soap and Water is now posted over at Red Lemonade. For those who have been asking for a way to read it on your iPad or whatever, here’s a PDF.* If you do read it that way, though, please still comment at Red Lemonade! Any little comment helps keep the manuscript on the front page.

Based on your responses, I’m going to move to putting up new chapters twice weekly, keeping them short. New chapters will now go up Wednesday and Sunday nights.

As always, thank you to all who are reading. And to those who are reposting, Facebook-liking, Tweeting, or forwarding, I am grateful beyond measure.

* I have e-reader versions for Kindle and ePub formats, but WordPress refuses to let me upload them. If anybody knows a way around that technical problem, please let me know, or just email me (address is on the About Me page if you don’t have it) and I’ll send the requisite version to you.

Soap and Water Chapter 2

by on Jul.17, 2011, under Uncategorized

Thanks to all of you who read Chapter 1 of Soap and Water, and special thanks to all of you who Facebook-liked it, reposted the link, Tweeted it, or forwarded the email. Extra-special thanks to those who left a comment—I not only truly appreciate the feedback, comments are how the manuscript stays front-page visible on the site. Every comment, even the simplest word, counts a lot.

Chapter 2 is now posted. If you liked Chapter 1, please help me keep the momentum going: read, repost, Tweet, and comment.

I’ve gotten a couple requests now to do more frequent, shorter chunks, to keep people’s attention without overwhelming them. Give me your thoughts if you have any preference. What would you be more likely to remember to read, short bits a few times a week, or a slightly longer bit once a week?

I’m touched by how many of you have already helped me out with this. Thank you all.

Help me get my book read!

by on Jul.10, 2011, under Books

As many of you know, a couple of years ago I finished my second novel, Soap and Water, and have since been trying to get it out into the world. It tells a story of civil war in a near-future American West, arising from today’s tensions based on things like ideology and water scarcity, and echoing our decade-long occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. More specifically, it tells the intersecting stories of five people stuck in that civil war, but instead of giving you a full outline I’d rather invite you to read the thing yourself.

See, recently I was invited to join Red Lemonade, a new social publishing venture created by the former editor of Soft Skull, one of America’s best independent presses. The idea is that authors who succeed in getting a community of readers excited about their work might be a good bet for actual book publication.

Here’s what I’d like to ask you all to do: read my book and help me get it noticed. If other readers there don’t love it, them’s the breaks, but with your help I hope at least to get them to give it a try. Red Lemonade is still a new community, so I honestly believe you guys could make that difference.

Step 1: Go to http://redlemona.de/ and register for a user account.

Step 2: Find the book at http://redlemona.de/joshua-malbin/soap-and-water. Read the first chapter, which I’ve already posted. Leave a comment.*

Step 3: If you like what you read, please invite your friends to join Red Lemonade too. Post this link on Twitter or Facebook or Google+ or whatever you do, or email it around to anyone you think might dig Soap and Water. Ask them to do the same.

I know it’s a drag to read long manuscripts on the internet. That’s why I plan to serialize Soap and Water at the rate of about 10 pages a week over the next couple months. New pages will always be posted Sunday night, with reminder emails going out concurrently .

I am so, so grateful to all of you who have read my stories over the last couple of years. I hope you’ll be willing to try out Soap and Water. I like it a lot.

* It doesn’t have to be praise. If you see a sentence, a paragraph, or a whole section that should be rewritten, leave a note saying so. I will take all editing suggestions seriously. As a new user your comment might be held for moderation. Don’t worry about it.
