I picked up Fables today. I was in Secret Headquarters and saw the single issues in the rack, and asked the supercute comix girl if it had been anthologized yet. She pointed me to 12 or so volumes on a shelf. I guess that’s what you meant by popular and established.

Also that it’s won like eight or so Eisner awards.
The first volume is okay. It really picks up in vol. 2.

OMG so good. Just finished The Mean Season — neither the most suspenseful nor the kickassest, but a downright lovely and dark interlude. The mining of lore and legend goes far deeper than you could expect. The political cynicism is totally tasty too.

I’m glad you like it. There’s been a bit of a dropoff the last couple of books after the big climax in book 11, but after you’ve been building to a climax for 11 books, the follow-on is bound to be a letdown.
